Yeah, im not really fussed about looking at other brands as long as they have a nice clean channel and a nice warm distortion/overdrive.
Ya all know the sound i want anyway. I like the Hundred Reasons telecaster sound but he used some crazy gear in the studio for the album

I'm looking for a bass head, possibly a Peavey one.
Got to be in good condition with wide EQ selection.
I know this is a post for "guitarists (6 strings)"..... sorry.

I wouldnt bother with a Marshall unless u wanna get a lotta cash out cos otherwise ur wastin money. Crate have got a new load out but limitted to guitar center U.S.A it wouldnt be too much if u wanna import the only prob is if u leave em on like all day for a few months the transitors can blow quite badly

If not I'm going to have to go with a combi.
I like the look o the Peavy combo115. But Chris from SONY said they have a rather nice one in River Music. But I can't remember the name of it, Chris?

Right amps!!
I always jump in these things too late, so I'm gonna try and cover everything and post as much info as possible along with some general notes which you may find too boring to read.
The JCM2000 series is probably the best amp Marshall has brought out arguably ever, with the exception of the legendary models (bluesbreaker, jtm, 1959 slp etc). It's got an all valve signal path, except if you use the effects loop which uses solid state switching (but that is true bypass, so when off, you're back to all valve). The only non-valve section of the amp is power rectification but then no other amp anywhere near it's price range has that. The 2000 Triple Super Lead amps sound ace, I have tried the 100W 2x12 and the sound with a telecaster was fantastic. There is a 100W TSL head on ebay now with a buy it now of ?549 as an indication of price. The DSL also sound great (my reference amp is a DSL401 1x12) I think if you want to go new or recent secondhand I think you could do worse than a JCM2000 of some kind. *IF* you want channel switching.
The buzziness that Ed is on about is the fact that the clipping for the distortion in the later JCM800s (2205 and after) and JCM900s is done with diodes (solid state) whereas previous to this a valve was used instead.
However, although the distortion on the earlier amps is smoother, it is not as "heavy" or extreme as on the later ones. That might figure into your choice.
The JCM800 (2203 and 4) are exactly the same amp (but in a different box) as the older Marshall JMP series (2103 and 2104) as long as you get an 800 with vertical inputs, the horizontal input versions are slightly different.
Of course, as Boggy said, there are plenty of other amps besides Marshalls but my area of 'expertise' as it were doesn't really cover anything else. The Peavey 5150 while a "cool" suggestion it might be a bit impractical as it doesn't actually have a clean channel. Eddie Van Halen (who it was designed for) wanted a single channel amp but Peavey thought that the market couldn't support a single channel amp these days so he told them to make it two distortion channels and no clean. It is possible to get kind of clean sounds out of one but if your pickups are high output you don't really stand a chance.
Mesa/Boogie are really expensive unless you go for a small combo like a Studio .22 or a Subway Rocket but even they will set you back around ?500. I have never heard one though so I can't comment really.
My advice is go to electro music or some other bigger music shop and just try a few, see what they've got and what you like the sound of.
Note on telecaster:
The guy from H.R. uses a tele custom of some sort with a neck humbucker so his neck setting will be higher output and a bit fatter. If you don't want to spend the cash on a custom try a Fat Tele maybe (ordinary tele with neck HB).
Hope I have been of some use and not bored the non "tech-heads".
Later,
Al

Who are you? Are you a moron?
No Crate amp is better than it's Marshall equivalent.
Also what do you mean by "the transistors can blow quite badly" how can they blow badly. Either they blow or they don't and if they do - it's bad.
Leaving most things on all day for a few months will probably break it or at least do some harm. So that point is moot.
I just remembered Mesa/Boogie have just brought out a budget range altho considering the prices of their other stuff i don't know how budget the prices are. They might be worth checking out.
Sorry for posting twice and being really boring.
